Cortex Ignition (souls-like PS1 tech demo)
A downloadable game
Read the attack. Find your opening. Make the hit count. Cortex Ignition is an original souls-like built from the ground up for the original PlayStation, and this is a short, playable tech demo of the combat and the world. You play Aletha, a light-sword fighter in a fog-bound industrial city, against the custodians that patrol it and something heavier waiting further in.
How a fight goes
Lock on, read the windup, and pick: a quick strike, a committed heavy, or an evade. Hits interrupt, but poise decides who staggers whom. Light enemies stagger off a hit, heavy ones only off a heavy attack or a short combo, and they can do the same to you. Enemies notice movement, chain melee combos and charge ranged shots. Swapping stance costs a five-second cooldown, and the swap itself is a show: Aletha bursts into polygons and rebuilds from the feet up, and dashes leave fading fragments behind a travelling wireframe.
The level
One authored level with eight points of interest on and off the main path: tutorial messages that teach the fight, in English or Italian, and collectables for going the other way. Finish the last encounter and the level stays open to explore.
Why it exists
Cortex Ignition is the flagship test for PSoXide, the Rust engine and editor these games are built with. The BSP level, textures, animation, combat and asset streaming all came out of that toolchain, so it's a checkpoint for the engine as much as a game. It runs on the real console. Expect a tech demo, not a finished game.
How to play
Download the BIN/CUE below, keep the .cue and .bin together, and open the .cue in your PS1 emulator. Or grab the PSoXide PS1 Demo Disc, which has this plus the rest of the collection, and runs in your browser. On a real PlayStation you need a way to boot homebrew discs. If the music is missing, check that you opened the .cue and extracted every file.
